Digital Control Systems Designer

LOCATION:
Querétaro, Mexico

The Position:
As a Control Systems Designer within our TAC division , you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our control systems technology. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, your expertise will drive the creation of sophisticated control systems that optimize vehicle performance, enhance safety, and ensure operational efficiency. This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your technical skills and creativity to solve complex challenges in a fast-paced and rewarding environment.

The Control Systems Team is shaping the design and build out of our digital controls platform across 30+ vehicle product lines. You will be responsible for new feature development like smart operator assists, collision avoidance integration (CAS Level 9), and ISO-13849. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of a rapidly growing technology sector, directly contributing to innovative solutions for real-world challenges in underground mining.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Utilize low variability PLC languages such as CODESYS for programming mobile equipment.
• Apply systems engineering best practices to optimize control systems performance.
• Implement CAN protocols, including CANOpen and J1939, for effective communication within vehicle systems.
• Design vehicle sensor instrumentation, architecture, and safety standards compliance according to ISO-13849.
• Evaluate and integrate devices from suppliers such as IFM, ABB, or similar, and demonstrate proficiency with various ECUs, including IO modules, controllers, and displays.
• Demonstrate expertise in both electric vehicle (EV) drivetrain components and diesel engine control systems.
• Utilize AutoCAD, Solidworks, or similar design and drafting software for creating and modifying technical drawings and designs as well as higher-level diagramming tools for control system architecture and network layouts.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:

• At least 5 years of engineering development experience in mechatronics, electrical engineering, software development, control systems, or related fields.
• Minimum 5 years of experience with the job responsibilities and duties described above.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages is an asset.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification is an asset.
Experience with legacy systems such as Danfoss is considered an asset.

First Year Goals:

• Learn the current and envisioned future state of MacLean Engineering’s ~15 core underground mining product line’s control systems.
• Advance the design and implementation of new CAN bus control product “MacLean Operating System (MOS)” with new top-level architecture designs for 2 vehicle application types (i.e., Rockbreaker).
• Implement features like CAS level 9 or remote/autonomous control into electrical schematics and PLC software for both battery electric and diesel vehicle classes.
• Execute on electrical designs and gain hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and system/subsystem validation processes by building hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test benches, specialized hardware components focusing on cost savings, and fully integrated electro-hydraulic vehicle control systems on first-of-their-class new builds.
