NETWORK & SYSTEMS ENGINEER Objective

The Network & Systems Engineer is a multifaceted role combining network architecture with systems engineering. This individual will design, implement, optimize, and maintain network and cloud-based systems infrastructure. The role emphasizes advanced cloud networking (especially AWS), automation, and performance, while flexibility is offered in areas like infrastructure as code and firewall specialization.

Key Responsibilities

Network Responsibilities

  • Design and implement plans to ensure network capacity meets current and future requirements.

  • Implement robust security measures across network systems.

  • Develop and deploy methodologies for testing and monitoring network performance.

  • Stay current on emerging networking technologies to improve cost-effectiveness and flexibility.

  • Manage and optimize security solutions including firewalls and WAFs (e.g., Fortinet, AWS WAF, Cloudflare).

  • Administer network equipment and hardware, including Meraki switches and access points.

  • Troubleshoot networking issues across VPCs, load balancers, and hybrid environments.

  • Document network architecture, configurations, and processes.

Systems Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and maintain serverless architectures using AWS services like Lambda, ECS, and S3.

  • Manage EC2 instances, storage solutions, and IAM permissions.

  • Contribute to automation efforts; experience with infrastructure as code (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform) is an asset.

  • Support high availability, scalability, and disaster recovery strategies.

  • Maintain secure infrastructure practices (e.g., backups, logging, governance).

  • Collaborate with DevOps teams to align infrastructure with CI/CD workflows.

General Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement network and systems changes.

  • Offer technical guidance on infrastructure improvements.

  • Evaluate tools and solutions for network and systems enhancements.

  • Support junior team members through mentoring and shared troubleshooting practices.

  • Participate in on-call rotations and planned off-hour maintenance when needed.

Skills & Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in computer science, engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum 5+ years in network engineering and systems architecture.

  • Experience in cloud environments (AWS required; Azure and GCP are assets).

Technical Expertise

  • Advanced knowledge of AWS networking and services (e.g., EC2, ECS, VPC, Load Balancers, CloudFront, Lambda).

  • Strong grasp of network protocols and design (e.g., BGP/eBGP, VPNs, DNS).

  • Experience with Fortinet; familiarity with Palo Alto firewalls is a plus.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation; experience with infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) is an asset, not required.

  • Experience with serverless environments and containerized applications.

  • Exposure to hybrid infrastructure environments including Meraki hardware is a plus.

Certifications

  • AWS Advanced Networking Speciality is a plus.

  • CCNP, CCIE, or similar networking certifications are a plus.

  • Palo Alto (PCCSE/PCNSE) and Fortinet (NSE 4+) certifications are considered assets.

  • Certifications in IaC tools or scripting (Terraform, Python, etc.) are a plus but not required.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English.

  • Able to work collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Self-driven, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
